Kettal is renowned for its mission to encapsulate the Mediterranean lifestyle through outdoor furniture that caters to contemporary living needs while adapting to various climates. Founded in 1966 by Manuel Alorda, the company swiftly gained international acclaim in the outdoor design sector. Today, headquartered in Barcelona with production facilities in Tarragona, Kettal offers a diverse array of products through flagship stores around the globe, including New York, London, and Paris, and is present in over 60 countries.
The inspiration behind Kettal emerged in 1964 when Manuel Alorda identified a significant gap in the Spanish market for well-designed outdoor furniture during a trip to Germany. Initially focused on aluminum outdoor pieces, Kettal gradually expanded its material offerings to create functional, durable, and aesthetically pleasing outdoor solutions. Despite its global reach, the company has maintained its production in Spain to ensure quality control and provide customization options for its clients.
A pivotal moment for Kettal came with the introduction of the Maia collection, designed by Patricia Urquiola in 2005. This collection gained widespread acclaim for its innovative approach to outdoor furniture, featuring intricate weaving techniques that imparted a dynamic, three-dimensional quality. Following this success, Kettal collaborated with renowned designers such as Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and Hella Jongerius, expanding its range of outdoor solutions.
Among Kettal's standout offerings is Park Life, designed by Jasper Morrison. This collection features lightweight, stackable furniture that combines durability with long-lasting aesthetic appeal. Another highlight is the Bitta collection by Rodolfo Dordoni, which draws inspiration from nautical themes, blending aluminum frames with woven polyester rope and teak wood, exemplifying the brand's versatility.
In 2020, Kettal showcased several new collections at Imm Cologne, including Band by Patricia Urquiola, a series of seating pieces that deconstruct and reassemble structural elements, and Molo by Dordoni, featuring oversized modular outdoor sofas. New outdoor lighting innovations include Half Dome by Naoto Fukasawa and Bela Lamps by Doshi Levien.
Kettal's dedication extends beyond innovative design to encompass a strong commitment to sustainability. The company continually researches new materials and eco-friendly finishes, utilizing low-impact paints and sourcing wood from certified forests, emphasizing its environmental responsibility.
While outdoor furniture remains the core of Kettal’s business, the brand has also ventured into contract furniture for offices, lobbies, and waiting areas. Notably, Kettal’s Office Pavilions take inspiration from outdoor gazebos, providing privacy, acoustic control, and flexible space arrangements. The Office Pavilion series, featuring movable walls, offers a versatile solution for open-plan offices, aligning with the brand's goal of enhancing collaborative work environments.
