FontanaArte was born in Milan in 1932 from the encounter between the architect Gio Ponti and the glass manufacturing entrepreneur Luigi Fontana. The brand produces lamps for the indoor and the outdoor with an unmistakable and timeless personality, concepts that become light and that, as time goes by, also come to be true icons born out of the exploration of Italian modernity. Among the ideas the company is representative of, innovation is conceived as stemming from a novel and at the same time archaic use of glass and metal, two seminal materials for the creation of objects which are not simply of beauty, but also timeless and extraordinary. Over almost one hundred years activity, the brand has been given numerous acknowledgments. Among these, the Compasso d’Oro award for the career in 1998, for having managed to create a thriving environment through the collaboration with several project designers.

FontanaArte, design lamps that become icons

In only ten years, FontanaArte created objects that have come to be real icons able to rethink the lighting design and to be of relevance still nowadays, despite the passing of time. Luminator is an example of this, an indirect light floor lamp with dimmer and a nickel-plated brass frame. This was one of the first projects to carry the signature of Pietro Chiesa, the owner of a craftsmen workshop for the artistic working of glass. Luminator thin metal stem opens in a cone-shape that accommodate the light source within; the lamp is characterized by an almost abstract rigor and pureness.

Fontana, designed by the master glass worker and decorator Max Ingrad, on the other hand, is a halogen table lamp with blown glass, made in 1954. Fontana is the first example of a timeless design object, the undisputed best selling product still nowadays that represents the abat-jour par excellence. The peculiarity of Fontana lies in the multiple lighting options, since both the base and the lampshade contain one or more light sources. The larger version also allows to have indirect lighting, as yet another light source projects a beam of light upwards. The differentiated light sources allow to respond to more lighting needs and to obtain from a tenuous and relaxing glow, to a sharper reading light, or an evoking and ambiance light. This is a valuable lamp in blown satin white or total black glass. Another unbeated icon within the FontanaArte catalog is the Pirellone, a floor lamp with dimmer and double lighting system, diffused and indirect, conceived in 1967 by Gio Ponti. With its satin nickel-plated brass structure and the diffuser in printed and curved glass, the Pirellone is a classic evergreen in light design. A simple structure, obtained through the use of an especially impact-resistant glass. The list of FontanaArte icons is completed by Giova which dates back to 1964, a hybrid in-between a pot and a lamp which marks the debut of Gae Aulenti in the world of design lighting. The table lamp-vase feature a chrome-metal base and a central sphere in transparent blown glass. Giova is available in two sizes and is a true light source with a flower vase laid upon.

Lighting by FontanaArte: suspended, ceiling, wall, floor and table lamps

FontanaArte offers countless solutions to meet needs of different living styles, without overlooking the elegance of a timeless design, which is visible in its suspended, ceiling, wall, floor and table lamps. Regina and Re are table lamps inspired by the chess with a diffused light, with a structure in painted metal and a diffuser in blown glass. Their soft and sinuous shapes represent the main characters of the chess, which profiles stick out imposingly against the white diffused light emanated by the opal glass. They can be positioned next to each other, or recall one another if placed in two different spots of the same room, or even be positioned independently from one another. The Setareh collection is a group of lighting fixtures designed for FontanaArte by Francesco Librizzi. All elements coming from the Serateh line come alive from the idea of giving form to light. The lamp, composed of a white-satin glass sphere is indeed born by and suspended within a thin metal structure. This composition plays with materials, colors, masses and circular trajectories giving life to a balanced design of gravitational dynamics. The Optunia Collection offers wall, floor, suspended and table lamps. Its functionality stands in the possibility of rotating the two large disks that compose its head, by 360°, allowing to create an incredible number of light combinations. The lower disk pivots around an axes while the upper disk does the same around another axes, perpendicular to the former. This double movement enables Optunia to make use of the wall or the ceiling to cast a diffused light.
